German pharmaceutical and crop chemical company Bayer AG announced this week that it is acquiring Monsanto Co., the St. Louis-based producer of seed and herbicide technologies.

According to a Reuters report, the agreement is the largest all-cash deal on record, at $66 billion ($128 per share). It’s the latest of three attempts the two firms have mounted to reach an agreement. If the deal is finalized, it will result in a company that controls more than one fourth of the world market for pesticides and seed products.
